Xtronic Transmission in the Nissan Pathfinder

The Xtronic CVT in Nissan Pathfinder does not employ standard gear ratios. There are two steel pulleys that are hydraulically operated in its place. The pulleys are linked by metal chain link. When you press the accelerator, the sides of v-shaped pulleys may pull apart or push together to vary the chain position on pulleys.

Since the movement of the belt is seamless between gear ratios, this Xtronic transmission does not shift in the standard sense. It means you do not suffer the shift shock, which comes across a jolt during the power loss while shifting in automatic transmission, is not there anymore. The quality of driving is much improved due to this.

Since there is no need for gears, the Xtronic CVT can do two things for improving the fuel economy. The first one involves the transmission- which permits the Pathfinder’s engine to operate at peak efficiency at all times. The second involves the advantage of gear elimination. Since there are no gears, no friction exists during the shifting.

Efficiency increases due to less friction so the fuel consumption is also less. Friction equals heat and when there is excessive friction, it may cause fatal damage to the car’s moving parts. Since this CVT technology utilizes fewer moving parts, there is also less friction. The durability of the transmission is also increased. The Xtronic transmission thus has a longer life cycle compared to the standard transmission.
