Nissan Integrates NASA Tech Into Its Autonomous Cars

shutterstock_317811290The future of car driving is approaching fast, as many companies already have working prototypes of self-driving cars and even have plans to sell them by 2020. Nissan’s shipping division has already started using electric, autonomous cars to pull trailers of new vehicles down to the nearby port. It takes special software in order to control and operate these cars, which is why Nissan is integrating NASA technology that can be found on the Mars Rover.

The proper management of a car’s on-board systems and electronics is extremely important for the success of these vehicles. Thanks to its regenerative braking and general efficiency, the Nissan Leaf has one of the longest ranges of any electric car at the moment. If too much or too little energy is applied in electric car, your drive can be difficult or significantly cut the range, so Nissan has always made sure its vehicles are equipped with the most advanced technologies. This extends all the way from the physical components of the car and battery to on-board computer.

NASA’s Seamless Autonomous Mobility (SAM) program has found success on the Mars Rover and will continue to do well in Nissan cars. This software helps autonomous cars understand and analyze unfamiliar or unpredictable situations. The SAM system is capable of analyzing the images and sensor data to engineer an effective and safe response. In the event of something way out of the ordinary, it can even contact a control center manager for assistance.
