Nissan drew in a lot of attention last summer when it became the first major auto manufacturer to give a time-frame for its commercial rollout of self-driving cars by 2020. Nissan did this the same way they announced years earlier with electric vehicles. The first time around, their announcement made them the industry’s leader in the latest cutting-edge automotive technology. Almost a year after Nissan’s self-driving vehicle announcement, Carlos Ghosn, Nissan’s CEO, has taken a step back and commented, “Self-driving cars remain a long way from commercial reality.” However Google seems to be on top of things in this arena. The search-engine giant has a real chance of transforming this great idea into a reality. Additionally, with Nissan’s recent step back, Google can take their time smoothening out all the wrinkles.
